Folk performers danced their way through a neighbourhood in Ganguly Bagan, turning celebration into spectacle on Wednesday morning.

Outside Academy of Fine Arts, the street turned into a canvas as artists painted colourful alpona to welcome the new year.

At Dakshineswar Kali Temple, the new year began in devotion for many as a sea of devotees, umbrellas in hand, waited patiently for a glimpse of the goddess.

Inside a modest shop near Kalighat, pages to a new year were turned and inked with prayer.

Fresh ledgers opened in the ritual of Haal Khata, which is dying but has not passed away yet.

Under festive lights at north Kolkata's Deshbandhu Park, the Uttorer Adda community space turned into a stage. Locals gathered on the eve of the Bengali New Year to celebrate with dance and music.
