The committee, headed by retired judge Pranab Chatterjee, met at JU's Salt Lake campus on Thursday and finalised its terms of reference.

The panel will determine the "circumstances and manner" in which unauthorised persons might have entered the campus, identify if anyone facilitated or assisted their entry, and examine whether any student, employee, security personnel or other university functionary was involved.

It will also examine the role of security personnel and other functionaries and whether any act of "omission, commission, negligence or failure to discharge assigned responsibilities" contributed to the incidents or their escalation.

Chatterjee said the committee would submit its report soon. It will meet again on September 15 and take depositions from those concerned in the intervening period.

The committee met on a day JU vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee visited Bikash Bhavan, the education secretariat, to brief higher education minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay on the events of August 19 and 20.

On August 19, during a student general body meeting at the faculty of engineering and technology, JU's ABVP unit president, Nikhil Das, was allegedly beaten by Left supporters around 9pm.

On August 20, ABVP supporters raided the campus twice - around 1am and again at about 2pm - to avenge the alleged assault.

During the raids, ABVP supporters allegedly vandalised the campus and threatened to attack women on the campus. The attackers also allegedly broke the outer ring of the university emblem designed by painter Nandalal Bose.

Asked about his meeting with the minister, Bhattacharjee declined comment.

Asked what suggestion he had given the vice-chancellor to resolve the unrest, Chattopadhyay said in a text message: "Our only focus is bringing back normalcy to campus. Hope all stakeholders will act responsibly."
