Surat: Brain-dead woman helps give a new life to six people

People remain sceptical of organ donations. Let alone in their deaths, not even when they are alive they will pledge to donate their organs. Religious beliefs and lack of family permissions are a few of the reasons that people give when asked about organ donations.

Despite all this, whenever news of people donating organs comes up, it tends to make us restore our faith in humanity. A 54-year-old woman, even in her death, gave a new lease of life to six persons.

In the multiple organ donation that took place on Friday, June 21. This is the first incident where the harvested lungs and heart have been transplanted in a single patient's body.

This is also the second lung donation and the 23rd heart donation taking place in Surat. Apart from that, relatives of the woman also donated her kidneys, liver and eyes.

As per details, the lungs and heart donations was accepted by Fortis Hospital in Mumbai and was transplanted in the body of 25-year-old Rupali Outi, who was in dire need of a transplant.

The organs were transported in only 85 minutes covering a distance of 269 km from Surat's BAPS Pramukh Swami Hospital to Fortis Hospital in Mulund.

The deceased woman was the wife of a social worker. She was bedridden since June 17 after she had complained of persistent headache for a fortnight.

When her condition deteriorated and she fell unconscious, she was taken to BAPS hospital by family members. They were informed that she had suffered brain haemorrhage. She was declared dead by the hospital on June 20
