Delivery worker dies after treatment, family seeks justice and help

News Karnataka 2 days ago

A 45-year-old delivery worker, Shahnawaz, died on March 15 after alleged medical negligence and complications following treatment at Victoria Hospital.

His grieving family has now sought justice and urgent financial support.

According to family members, Shahnawaz was admitted to the hospital on February 19 with Fournier's gangrene, a rare and serious infection affecting the scrotum that often carries a poor prognosis.

His wife, Sharly, said doctors performed a procedure and discharged him on March 3 before he had fully recovered or his stitches had healed.

She alleged that he was later referred to the plastic surgery department, but was not admitted as the wound was considered unfit for further surgery at that stage.

The family reportedly remained on the hospital premises for several days seeking help, but later returned home after failing to secure admission.

Sharly said that on March 15, the stitches suddenly opened at home, causing severe bleeding. Shahnawaz reportedly died within minutes.

Hospital authorities have stated that the exact cause of death, whether bleeding or infection, will be determined after an internal inquiry.

The Medical Superintendent of Victoria Hospital said a three-member committee comprising senior professors from medicine, surgery and plastic surgery has been formed to examine treatment records, case sheets and statements from doctors and the family.

The report is expected by the end of April. Authorities said action would be taken if any lapse in patient care is found.

Shahnawaz was the sole breadwinner of the family. He is survived by his wife and four young children, including a four-month-old infant.

With no regular income and growing responsibilities, the family is facing severe hardship and has appealed for financial assistance.
