Seoul: Tech giant Samsung is reportedly developing a new pair of AI-powered smart glasses, signalling its entry into the rapidly evolving extended reality (XR) market.
Leaks suggest the device, codenamed 'Jinju', could launch later this year, with a more advanced version expected in 2027.
The development places Samsung alongside global players such as Apple, Google and Meta, as competition intensifies in the wearable tech segment.
Reports indicate that the Jinju smart glasses may resemble Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, featuring a lightweight frame and a minimalist design.
Unlike some high-end XR devices, the Jinju model is expected to launch without a built-in display, focusing instead on camera, audio and AI-assisted features. The glasses are likely to weigh around 50 grams and may include photochromic lenses for adaptive light conditions.
The smart glasses could be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 processor, designed specifically for augmented reality devices. Leaked specifications suggest the inclusion of a 12-megapixel Sony IMX681 camera, along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
Other anticipated features include directional audio and possible bone-conduction technology, allowing users to hear sound without traditional earbuds. Battery capacity is expected to be around 155mAh, although these details remain unconfirmed.
Samsung's smart glasses are expected to run on the Android XR platform, developed in collaboration with Google. A key highlight could be the integration of Google's Gemini AI, enabling voice-based commands and contextual assistance.
Users may be able to capture images, translate languages in real time, receive navigation guidance via maps, and access weather updates — all through voice interaction. This AI-first approach reflects a broader industry trend towards hands-free, intelligent computing.
The Jinju model is reportedly expected to be priced between $379 and $499 (approximately ₹35,000 to ₹47,000), making it relatively accessible compared to premium XR devices.
A second, more advanced version, codenamed 'Haean', could launch in 2027. This model is expected to feature a micro-LED display and may be priced between $600 and $900 (around ₹56,000 to ₹85,000), positioning it in the higher-end segment.
While Samsung has not officially confirmed the product, reports suggest the company may preview the smart glasses at Google I/O or tease them during its Galaxy Unpacked event in July.
A commercial rollout could follow later, similar to the company's strategy with its XR headset, allowing time for further development and ecosystem integration.
