EC launches SIR drive in four states

EC launches SIR drive in four states

The Election Commission has commenced the enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Odisha, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim, marking the next stage of an exercise aimed at ensuring accurate and inclusive voter lists.

The poll panel said on Sunday that the enumeration phase began on May 30 as part of the third phase of the SIR programme, which was launched across 16 states and three Union Territories in a staggered manner from May 14.

Under the exercise, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will undertake house-to-house visits to distribute, collect and verify enumeration forms from electors. Voters may also submit their completed forms online.

According to the Election Commission, electors whose forms are received by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) on or before June 28 will be included in the draft electoral rolls. Those unable to submit the forms within the stipulated period can still apply for voter registration through Form 6, along with the prescribed declaration, during the claims and objections stage.

The four states covered in the latest phase account for more than 3.67 crore electors. Odisha has the largest electorate among them, with over 3.34 crore registered voters. The exercise in the state is being supported by 38,123 BLOs and 8,391 Booth Level Agents (BLAs).

Mizoram has an electorate of 8.75 lakh, while Sikkim has 4.71 lakh registered voters. In Manipur, the exercise will cover around 20.92 lakh electors.

The Election Commission has appealed to eligible voters to actively participate in the revision process and cooperate with election officials during the door-to-door verification exercise.

The poll authority said the Special Intensive Revision is intended to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls while preventing the inclusion of ineligible persons. It reiterated that every Indian citizen aged 18 years or above on the qualifying date, and not otherwise disqualified under law, is entitled to be registered as a voter.
