While big-budget spectacles like Dhurandhar 2 continue to dominate headlines with massive collections, a small South Indian film has quietly emerged as a major box office success.
Thai Kizhavi, a Tamil comedy-drama, has surprised both audiences and industry observers with its remarkable performance.
Released just days before the much-hyped Dhurandhar, the film managed to hold its ground and deliver exceptional returns. Made on a modest budget of around ₹9-10 crore, Thai Kizhavi has reportedly earned over ₹61 crore at the box office, nearly nine times its production cost. Even before its domestic success, the film had already recovered its budget through overseas collections, which stood at approximately ₹10.35 crore.
The film's success is being attributed largely to its compelling storyline and the powerful performance of its lead actress, a 63-year-old veteran who has received widespread praise for her role.
A Story Rooted in Emotion and Reality
Thai Kizhavi revolves around the life of a strict yet wealthy elderly woman who leads an independent life. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when she falls seriously ill, prompting her estranged sons-motivated by greed-to return. The film delves into themes of family selfishness, emotional neglect, and the harsh realities of old age, striking a chord with audiences.
Despite facing stiff competition from big releases, Thai Kizhavi has proven that strong storytelling and impactful performances can still drive success at the box office. Its unexpected rise serves as a reminder that content-driven cinema continues to hold its place, even in an era dominated by high-budget blockbusters.
