The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a key बदलाव to the Decision Review System (DRS) for IPL 2026, aiming to eliminate tactical misuse by teams.
With only a couple of matches played so far, several rule changes are gradually coming into focus.
DRS Limited to Single Decision Review
Under the revised rule, the third umpire will now review only the specific decision for which the DRS has been requested. This means teams can no longer use a single review to check multiple aspects of a play.
Previously, teams often combined appeals-such as reviewing a caught-behind decision while also checking for a wide or no-ball. This practice will no longer be allowed, ensuring a more focused and fair use of the system.
Captains Briefed Before Season Start
According to reports, all ten team captains were informed about this change ahead of the season. BCCI officials, including the head of match referees and the head of umpires, explained the updated rules and their implementation in detail.
Stricter Timeline for Appeals
Another important clarification is the time limit for reviews. If a batter wants to challenge a call-such as claiming a delivery should be called wide-they must initiate the DRS appeal within the initial 15 seconds. There will be no additional time granted after the first review decision.
Changes to Concussion Substitute Rule
The BCCI has also refined the concussion substitute rule. Any replacement player must now be chosen from the list of five designated impact substitutes. Additionally, if a wicketkeeper is injured, a suitable replacement must come from the match squad.
For overseas players, a like-for-like substitution will depend on team composition. If the playing XI already includes four foreign players, the replacement must be an Indian player.
Focus on Fair Play and Clarity
These rule changes are aimed at improving fairness and reducing loopholes in decision-making. By limiting DRS usage and clarifying substitution rules, the BCCI hopes to ensure a more transparent and streamlined game in IPL 2026.
