Mango season has begun, and fruit vendors are now stocking up on mangoes in the market. Almost everyone enjoys eating mangoes. However, diabetes patients often wonder whether they should eat them.
Mangoes are high in natural sugar, which can increase the risk of high blood sugar levels. Shalini Bliss, head of the dietetics department at PSRI Hospital, spoke to India TV about whether diabetics should eat mangoes, and if so, how much they should eat each day.
Eat in moderation
According to Shalini Bliss, it's not true that diabetics shouldn't eat mangoes. People with diabetes need to pay attention to the correct amount and timing of mango consumption. Mangoes also contain nutrients like fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C, which are beneficial for our bodies. The fructose sugar in mangoes can rapidly increase blood sugar. Therefore, mangoes should be consumed in moderation.
How many mangoes should be eaten in a day?
Diabetics should avoid eating too many mangoes at once. If your sugar levels are under control, eating half or one small mango a day is considered safe. The best time to eat mangoes is in the afternoon. Therefore, you can eat mangoes after meals. At that time, the body can digest them more easily and the sugar effect will be reduced.
Foods to Avoid After Eating Mangoes
You should avoid eating other sweet foods after eating mangoes. Similarly, if you do eat mangoes, limit your carb intake that day. You should also avoid mango shakes or fruit shakes, as they are low in fiber and high in sugar.
