In a significant policy shift, the government has announced new rules for PAN card applications, which will come into effect from April 1, 2026. The updated guidelines aim to strengthen the verification process and reduce cases of fraud and incorrect information.
Aadhaar Alone No Longer Sufficient
Until now, applicants could easily obtain a PAN card using only their Aadhaar card through an e-KYC process. However, under the new rules, Aadhaar alone will not be enough. Applicants will now be required to submit additional supporting documents along with Aadhaar to complete the application process.
List of Mandatory Documents
From April 2026 onwards, individuals applying for a PAN card must provide valid proof of identity and date of birth. The accepted documents include:
- Birth Certificate
- Class 10 Marksheet
- Passport
- Driving License
- Voter ID Card
This means that applicants must furnish at least one of these documents in addition to Aadhaar for successful verification.
Focus on Accuracy and Verification
The government has made it mandatory for PAN details to exactly match the information on the applicant's Aadhaar card. Any mismatch in name, date of birth, or other personal details may lead to rejection of the application.
Deadline for Easier Process
Those wishing to apply for a PAN card under the existing simplified process can do so until March 31, 2026. After this date, the revised documentation rules will be strictly लागू.
Objective Behind the Change
The move is aimed at enhancing the security and reliability of the PAN issuance system. By requiring multiple documents, authorities intend to curb identity fraud and ensure more accurate data records.
