People have different beliefs about ghosts. Generally, people consider ghosts to be the souls of people. It is believed that those whose wishes remain unfulfilled after death become ghosts.
People also believe that ghosts live in old houses, forests, or deserted places and can sometimes be seen; such spirits are called ghosts. However, according to science, there is no concrete evidence of the existence of ghosts. Therefore, many people consider them mere fear, imagination, or folklore. A question related to this topic has been answered by the famous Baba Premananda Maharaj of Vrindavan, Mathura.
Who are ghosts?
Maharaj's beloved disciple, Naval Nagari Baba, asked him a question: what do ghosts look like, and who becomes a ghost? Maharaj replied, "We have seen many ghosts in Vrindavan. Such as when someone commits suicide, has a sudden accident, or commits a grave sin. In fact, this place is believed to be under the rule of Lord Bhuteshwar. The same Lord Bhuteshwar who lives in Mathura rules Vrindavan."
What do ghosts look like?
Nawal Nagri further asked, "What do ghosts look like?" Answering this question, Maharaj Ji said, "Their form changes every moment. If they appear as women, their true form remains the same. One minute they can transform into a scary form, or the next minute they can transform into a completely terrifying form, or suddenly they can appear before you in a very beautiful form."
Can anyone see a ghost?
On this question, Premananda Maharaj laughs and says, "If he thinks you will do him good, he will meet you. But if he thinks you will die and become a ghost after seeing him, why would he meet you? If he thinks you will have a heart attack if you see him, why would he come? He won't. He only goes where he will do him good."
Do ghosts face difficulties?
Maharaj continues, "There is so much suffering in the world of ghosts that even if rivers are flowing, they cannot drink a drop of water or eat a morsel of food. They go to saints for salvation. Beings with tamasic qualities are most affected by them. Those who commit evil deeds are affected by ghosts."
"But such ghosts cannot touch anyone. Ghosts cannot touch those who chant the name and mantra. They do not have that much power; if they tried, they would be reduced to ashes. That is why it is said, 'Ghosts and spirits do not come near.' So do not be afraid. By chanting the name of God and the names of God's devotees, no evil force can come near. There is great power in the name of God and His devotees."
