Abhishek Sharmadelivered a sensational batting display as Sunrisers Hyderabad registered one of the most explosive starts in Indian Premier League history, racing to 105 without loss in the powerplay against Punjab Kings on Saturday.
The match, held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, witnessed SRH equal the joint third-highest powerplay total ever recorded in the IPL, underlining their aggressive batting approach.
Opening the innings, Abhishek Sharma wasted no time in asserting dominance. He launched into the bowling attack from the outset, finding boundaries with ease and putting immediate pressure on the opposition.
He began by taking on Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett, showcasing his intent with clean hitting. His aggressive approach disrupted the rhythm of the bowlers, forcing errors and extras.
Arshdeep's second over proved particularly expensive, conceding 20 runs, including wides, as Abhishek raced to 34 off just 13 deliveries.
The defining moment came in the fifth over when Abhishek dismantled Vijaykumar Vyshak, smashing four consecutive sixes in a single over. He reached his half-century in just 18 balls, one of the fastest of the season.
In doing so, he became the first cricketer in IPL history to score five fifties in fewer than 20 balls, highlighting his growing stature as a destructive T20 batter.
By the end of the powerplay, SRH had surged past the 100-run mark in just 5.5 overs—only the fifth such instance in IPL history. Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad account for three of those occasions.
At the other end, Travis Head initially played a supporting role before accelerating to keep up the momentum. The pair stitched together another formidable opening stand, continuing their consistent partnership in the league.
With this effort, Abhishek and Head registered their fifth 100-plus opening partnership in the IPL, joining elite pairs such as Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner, as well as Jonny Bairstow and Warner.
They also matched the tally of Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli for the most century opening stands in IPL history.
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer rotated his bowlers in search of a breakthrough, introducing options like Marco Jansen, but the relentless assault continued.
Abhishek alone scored 66 runs during the powerplay, the second-highest by an SRH batter in this phase, just behind Travis Head's 84 against Delhi Capitals in 2024. He also equalled the record for most sixes in a powerplay, smashing seven—matching feats achieved by Sanath Jayasuriya, Jos Buttler and Bairstow.
The onslaught finally ended in the ninth over when part-time off-spinner Shashank Singh struck twice in quick succession. Travis Head departed for a brisk 38 off 23 balls, while Abhishek followed soon after for a scintillating 74 off 28 deliveries.
His innings, featuring eight sixes and five fours, came at a staggering strike rate of 264.29 and had already tilted the match heavily in SRH's favour.
Abhishek Sharma's explosive knock showcased a perfect blend of aggression and control, setting the tone for Sunrisers Hyderabad early in the match. By dominating the powerplay, he ensured SRH seized control within the first six overs, leaving Punjab Kings with a daunting task to recover.
