In a deeply emotional moment amid ongoing conflict, 11 toddlers who were evacuated from Gaza as premature infants have finally reunited with their families after nearly two years.
The children were among 29 preterm babies rescued from the neonatal intensive care unit at Al Shifa Hospital in November 2023, during intense military operations. At the time, they were transported to Egypt for urgent care as fighting escalated.
Due to security restrictions and closed borders, the infants were allowed to leave only with medical teams. Their parents were unable to accompany them, leading to prolonged separation during a critical stage of early life.
For many families, the reunion marked the first time they could hold their children since birth.
One mother, Sundus Al-Kurd, described the moment as a 'new beginning' as she embraced her daughter Bissan for the first time in over two years.
'I couldn't touch her or hold her all this time,' she said, expressing both joy and the pain of lost moments.
However, the reunion also carried emotional challenges. Many children, having spent their early years away, did not immediately recognise their parents.
Doctors said the evacuation itself was life-threatening, with infants transported in incubators under difficult conditions. Tragically, seven of the 29 babies did not survive while in Egypt.
Of the remaining children, 11 have now returned to Gaza, while others remain with relatives outside the territory.
Families are now slowly rebuilding emotional bonds with their children. Parents are taking gradual steps to help toddlers recognise and connect with them, hoping time will heal the separation caused by war.
The reunions, facilitated by the United Nations, have brought moments of hope amid ongoing hardship in Gaza.
For many, the return of these children symbolises resilience, survival, and the enduring strength of familial bonds even in the face of conflict
