Sri Vijaya Puram: The Andaman and Nicobar administration created history on Saturday by setting a new Guinness World Record for unfurling the world's largest underwater national flag at Radhanagar Beach.
The huge Tricolour, measuring approximately 60 by 40 metres, was deployed beneath the sea in a meticulously planned and coordinated operation involving multiple agencies and trained divers at Swaraj Dweep.
The complex underwater unfurling exercise saw participation from personnel of the Andaman and Nicobar Police, Forest Department, Indian Navy, and Indian Coast Guard, along with scuba divers from several diving centres.
The operation required precise coordination and technical expertise to ensure the large flag was deployed smoothly under water without damage, making it a remarkable feat of teamwork and planning.
Lieutenant Governor D K Joshi, Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar, and Director General of Police H S Dhaliwal were present to witness the historic achievement, along with other senior officials.
At around 10.35 am, Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath officially confirmed the record and presented the certificate to the Lieutenant Governor.
Praising the efforts of all involved, Joshi described the achievement as a testament to the coordination, dedication, and capability of the participating teams.
The successful record attempt is expected to further enhance the profile of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a hub for adventure tourism and marine activities. Swaraj Dweep, known for its pristine beaches and diving sites, continues to attract visitors from across the world.
Officials noted that such globally recognised events contribute to promoting the islands on the international stage, encouraging tourism and economic growth.
The administration is set to attempt another Guinness World Record on Sunday—the 'Tallest Human Stack'—at the Lighthouse dive site on Swaraj Dweep. The event is expected to see participation from trained divers and officials, including the Lieutenant Governor.
The underwater unfurling of the largest national flag marks a proud moment for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Beyond the record, the achievement reflects the region's growing prominence in hosting unique and large-scale events, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for adventure and tourism.
