Mangaluru: Transgender entrepreneur Ani Mangaluru, proprietor of 'Ani Cafe' in the city, has strongly denied allegations of kidnapping, harassment, and extortion levelled against her, calling them 'completely false and baseless.'
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Ani responded to a viral video in which an individual identified as Anil Kumar from Thyagaraja Colony in Nanjangud made accusations against her. Visibly emotional, she stated that the controversy had severely impacted her personal and professional life, making it difficult for her to step out in public.
Ani said the allegations have caused significant harm to her reputation and standing in society. She maintained that she has built her life and business through hard work despite facing multiple challenges as a member of the transgender community.
'The accusations are entirely false and have deeply affected me,' she said, adding that such claims not only damage her image but also undermine the efforts she has made to establish herself as an entrepreneur.
Recounting her journey, Ani highlighted the lack of support she received during the early stages of her career. Before starting her café, she worked as an auto driver and often extended help to those in need.
'I used to offer free rides to fellow transgender persons and pregnant women, but those efforts went largely unrecognised,' she said. 'Today, instead of appreciation, I am facing false accusations.'
She stressed that her achievements came through perseverance and determination, despite social stigma and limited opportunities.
Ani also spoke about the progress made by members of the transgender community in recent years. She noted that many individuals have gone on to become professionals such as doctors and lawyers, reflecting growing acceptance and opportunities.
'At the same time, I chose entrepreneurship as my path,' she said. 'Just as I cannot expect others to follow my journey, it is unfair for anyone to question my choices.'
She reiterated that her work, including running her café, is part of a broader effort to promote inclusion and independence within the community.
Addressing criticism of her social media presence, Ani defended her content, stating that her videos and reels are intended to inspire and uplift transgender individuals.
'Is it wrong to create content that motivates our community to come into the mainstream and live with dignity?' she asked.
She further alleged that Anil Kumar has repeatedly spread misinformation about her through social media platforms and suggested that there could be a larger conspiracy behind the accusations.
Ani urged authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter to establish the truth. She emphasised that the issue goes beyond personal harm and affects the dignity of the transgender community as a whole.
'The false allegations have not only affected me but have also hurt the dignity of the entire community,' she said, calling for accountability against those spreading misinformation.
The controversy surrounding Ani Mangaluru highlights the challenges faced by transgender entrepreneurs in navigating public scrutiny and misinformation. As the matter unfolds, her demand for a fair investigation underscores the need for due process and sensitivity, particularly in cases involving marginalised communities.
