Bengaluru plans massive traffic revamp with flyovers and skywalks

News Karnataka 3 weeks ago

Bengaluru is preparing for a significant transformation in its traffic infrastructure, with city authorities planning a wide-ranging overhaul to tackle congestion and improve road safety.

The initiative, led by the Bengaluru Traffic Police, includes the construction of 35 new flyovers, 25 underpasses, and over 100 skywalks across key areas of the city.

High-traffic zones such as Mahadevapura and Whitefield are at the centre of the proposed upgrades. These areas have witnessed a surge in vehicle numbers, leading to frequent bottlenecks and extended travel times.

The plan aims to create smoother, signal-free corridors in critical stretches like Hebbal and Bannerghatta Road, reducing delays and improving overall traffic flow.

Beyond large infrastructure projects, the city is also focusing on smaller yet impactful changes. Authorities have proposed more than 3,700 interventions, including the installation of thousands of new signboards and measures to address waterlogging issues.

These upgrades are expected to enhance road usability, particularly during monsoon seasons when water accumulation disrupts traffic.

With over 200 pedestrian fatalities reported annually, improving safety for walkers has become a major concern. The introduction of skywalks and safer crossings aims to reduce accidents and provide secure passage across busy roads.

Redesigning road layouts and ensuring better traffic management are also part of the strategy to protect vulnerable road users.

The plan also includes relocating bus stops to reduce congestion and introducing multilevel parking facilities in crowded areas. These measures are intended to streamline vehicle movement and minimise roadside obstructions.

As Bengaluru continues to grow as a major urban and IT hub, the pressure on its infrastructure has intensified. This comprehensive plan reflects a concerted effort to modernise the city's transport network and improve daily commuting experiences.

If implemented effectively, the initiative could mark a turning point in addressing Bengaluru's long-standing traffic challenges, offering residents a safer and more efficient way to navigate the city.
