In a renewed push to tackle traffic congestion and improve road conditions, the Greater Bengaluru Authority has directed officials to begin towing abandoned and illegally parked vehicles across the city.
GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, during a coordination meeting, instructed authorities to immediately remove vehicles that have been left unattended on roads for extended periods.
Officials confirmed that a list of such vehicles has already been prepared, with priority given to those identified by North and Central city corporations and handed over to the Bengaluru Traffic Police.
The move comes after towing operations, which were suspended in February 2022 following public backlash over alleged harassment, have now resumed. The Bengaluru Traffic Police restarted enforcement on April 5 in central zones, with plans to expand the drive citywide in phases.
Authorities said the objective is to ensure smoother traffic flow and address widespread issues caused by unauthorised parking.
Officials have been directed to enforce parking regulations strictly, particularly on major and white-topped roads. Vehicles will only be allowed in designated parking zones.
Police have warned that continuous towing drives will be carried out, and violators may face higher penalties, including towing charges in addition to fines.
Alongside enforcement measures, the GBA has also prioritised infrastructure improvements ahead of the monsoon. Each of the city's five corporations has been instructed to procure pothole-filling machines to accelerate repair work.
Concerns over incomplete road restoration after utility projects were also raised, with authorities warning of cost recovery from agencies failing to restore roads on time.
Permissions for road cutting will now be routed through the MARCS software system, ensuring better monitoring and adherence to timelines for restoration.
The initiative reflects a broader effort by civic authorities to improve urban mobility, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety across Bengaluru
