The suspension came into effect from 4 pm to midnight and covers all mobile internet technologies in the specified area, where demonstrators, including members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and students, have been staging protests demanding action over the alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

Order issued under Telecommunications Act

The suspension order was issued by the Union Home Secretary under the powers conferred by Section 20(2)(b) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, read with the relevant provisions of the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024.

The directive was addressed to the Commissioner of Delhi Police, authorising the temporary suspension of mobile internet services in the designated area.

According to the order, the decision was taken in the interest of maintaining public order and preventing any situation that could lead to a public emergency.

Mobile internet suspended for eight hours

As per the notification, all mobile internet services, irrespective of technology, were suspended from 4 pm on July 23 until 12 midnight on the same day.

The order applies only to the specified 1.5-km radius around Jantar Mantar, one of Delhi’s designated protest sites.

Officials stated that the temporary restriction was imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order during the demonstrations.

The order did not mention any restrictions on fixed broadband or wired internet services.

Government cites public safety

The official order stated that the suspension was considered necessary in the interest of public safety, public order and to prevent any possible incitement to commit offences.

It noted that the temporary restriction had been imposed after assessing the prevailing situation in and around the protest venue.

Authorities said such measures are permitted under the Telecommunications Act and related rules when there is a perceived threat to public order or security.

Protests continue over NEET issue

Jantar Mantar has witnessed continuous protests in recent days, with students, activists and members of the Cockroach Janta Party demanding accountability over the alleged NEET examination irregularities.

The protests have intensified following recent confrontations between demonstrators and police, leading to heightened security arrangements across parts of the national capital.

Police have deployed additional personnel and increased surveillance around key protest locations to prevent any untoward incidents.

Security tightened in central Delhi

The suspension of mobile internet forms part of broader security measures implemented in central Delhi as authorities seek to manage large gatherings and maintain public order.

Officials have urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement personnel and advised commuters to expect increased security checks and possible traffic diversions in the vicinity of Jantar Mantar.

Authorities reiterated that the restriction is temporary and limited to the notified area and duration.

The government maintained that the decision was taken solely as a preventive measure to ensure peace and public safety while protests continue in the national capital.
