A Delta Air Lines aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport on Sunday night after experiencing a serious engine malfunction.
The Airbus A330, operated by Delta Air Lines, was en route to Atlanta with 272 passengers and 14 crew members on board when the incident occurred. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to airline officials, the aircraft, operating as Flight 104, encountered a mechanical failure in its left engine moments after takeoff. Passengers onboard reported hearing loud bangs and seeing flashes, which caused panic inside the cabin.
The aircraft remained airborne for approximately nine minutes before the pilots made the decision to return to the airport as a precautionary measure.
In communication with air traffic control, the pilot confirmed the engine issue and initiated emergency procedures to ensure a safe return.
The aircraft landed safely back at the Guarulhos airport with the assistance of emergency response teams. Firefighters were deployed as a precaution, especially after videos from the scene showed debris scattered on the runway and small fires in nearby grassy areas.
Airport fire crews quickly contained the flames, preventing any further risk. Emergency services remained on standby until the situation was fully under control.
Following the safe landing, all passengers and crew were evacuated without incident. Travellers were escorted back to the terminal and later provided accommodation in hotels across São Paulo.
Delta Air Lines stated that it is actively working to rebook affected passengers on alternative flights to their destinations.
While the airline confirmed that the incident was caused by a mechanical failure in the left engine, the exact reason behind the malfunction has not yet been disclosed.
A detailed technical investigation is expected to be carried out to determine the cause and assess any maintenance or operational factors involved.
The swift response by the flight crew and emergency teams ensured that a potentially dangerous situation was handled safely. The incident highlights the importance of stringent safety protocols in aviation, which continue to play a crucial role in protecting passengers and crew during emergencies.
