Mangaluru: Coastal Karnataka's higher education ecosystem witnessed a landmark convergence on April 7 as Digii100x Mangaluru brought together nearly 100 founders, institutional heads, academic decision-makers, policymakers, and industry leaders under one roof at Taj Vivanta Mangaluru.

The closed-door, action-oriented gathering marked a significant chapter in the Digii100x series, designed to foster candid dialogue among those shaping the region's academic and policy landscape. The event created a rare platform where vice chancellors, principals, deans, and policymakers engaged in meaningful discussions around pressing challenges and future opportunities.

Digii100x Mangaluru was structured to prioritise outcomes over rhetoric. The event featured fireside chats, closed-door roundtables, panel discussions, and an unconference session, allowing participants to exchange ideas openly and focus on practical next steps.

Unlike conventional conferences, the gathering emphasised honest conversations among institutional leaders who directly manage and influence higher education in Coastal Karnataka. The presence of policymakers and industry representatives added depth to discussions, bridging gaps between academia, governance, and the corporate sector.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by U. T. Khader as the chief guest, alongside Captain Brijesh Chowta, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), and Debashis Chatterjee, Director of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. A special video message was delivered by T. G. Sitharam, former chairman of All India Council for Technical Education.

Captain Brijesh Chowta made a notable announcement, stating that Mangaluru qualifies under all three priority frameworks outlined in the Union Budget: city economic regions, educational townships, and holistic healthcare and wellness regions. He expressed readiness to collaborate with the Karnataka government to push forward proposals to the Union government, aiming to unlock the region's full potential.

In a candid address, U. T. Khader highlighted the urgent need for transformation in the education sector. He noted that many institutions are still preparing students for jobs that may not exist within the next 5 to 10 years.

He emphasised the importance of innovation and urged stakeholders to integrate emerging technologies into governance systems. In a significant appeal, he invited experts present at the event to contribute ideas for introducing artificial intelligence into the functioning of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, underlining its potential benefits for society at large.

The discussions throughout the day spanned critical themes such as artificial intelligence strategy, digital transformation, and data privacy under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA). The evolving relationship between industry and academia also emerged as a key topic.

A fireside chat titled 'Coastal Karnataka's Higher-Education Ecosystem: The Making and the Rise Ahead' provided regional context, with H. S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, reflecting on the region's progress and future direction.

The event saw participation from leading academic institutions, including representatives such as Mohammed Farhaad Yenepoya, Vivek Alva, and Praveen Martis, along with senior leaders from Nitte University and SDM Educational Society.

Industry perspectives were brought in by representatives from major organisations like Jio Platforms, Amazon Web Services, KPMG India, and Intel Corporation.

A key takeaway from the event came through a thought-provoking remark by Hemant Sahal, Founder and CEO of Digii. Drawing parallels with the banking sector, he highlighted how technology has transformed accessibility and operations.

He stressed that a similar technological shift is now essential in education, suggesting that digital transformation is no longer optional but a necessity for institutions aiming to stay relevant and impactful.

The programme was efficiently anchored by R. G. D'Souza, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Yenepoya Deemed to be University.

As the event concluded, it left behind a strong sense of momentum and shared purpose. Participants expressed optimism that Coastal Karnataka's institutions are not passively awaiting change but are actively shaping the future of higher education in the region.

Digii100x Mangaluru has set a benchmark for collaborative, action-driven dialogue in the education sector. By bringing together policymakers, academic leaders, and industry experts, the event highlighted the importance of collective effort in addressing emerging challenges.

With technology, policy innovation, and institutional leadership aligning, the region appears poised to redefine its role in India's higher education landscape.
