What began as a conventional career path for a Bengaluru engineering graduate turned into an inspiring journey of courage and service.
Swathi Shantha Kumar, once set to join a corporate job with IBM, is today a Major in the Indian Army and a globally recognised peacekeeper.
Her dedication and leadership recently earned her the prestigious United Nations Secretary-General's Award 2025, recognising her work during a peacekeeping mission.
In 2016, Swathi was a typical engineering graduate in Bengaluru with a promising corporate career ahead. However, she chose a completely different path by joining the Indian Army, driven by a desire to serve the nation and make a meaningful difference.
Raised in a middle-class family, Swathi grew up in a disciplined and education-focused environment. Her father worked at ITC Limited while her mother served as a government school teacher.
She studied at St Charles High School, where academics and sports both played a key role in shaping her character and leadership qualities.
Swathi later became part of the first all-women military engagement team deployed by the Indian Army to Malakal under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The region had been severely affected by conflict and violence, making the mission both challenging and sensitive.
During her 1.5-year deployment, Swathi and her team worked closely with local communities, particularly women and children. Their efforts focused on building trust, promoting safety, and encouraging women's participation in peace and development activities.
Swathi's work in South Sudan went beyond traditional military responsibilities. Through outreach programmes, interaction sessions, and community support initiatives, she helped empower women and inspire young girls in the conflict-hit region.
Her contributions were widely recognised within the UN peacekeeping framework, ultimately earning her the Secretary-General's Award for outstanding service.
The recognition not only celebrates her individual achievements but also highlights India's growing role in global peacekeeping missions.
Swathi's journey—from a young engineer in Bengaluru to an internationally honoured peacekeeper—stands as a powerful example of determination, courage, and service beyond borders.
