Finish flood works by May or face suspension: Bengaluru warns engineers

News Karnataka 3 weeks ago

With the monsoon season approaching, the Greater Bengaluru Authority has issued a strict warning to engineers overseeing flood mitigation projects across the city.

Officials said any delay in completing critical works by the end of May could lead to suspension, underlining the urgency of preventing another season of severe waterlogging.

Authorities directed engineers to carry out drone surveys of major stormwater drains before and after desilting works. Ground inspections of flood-prone areas have also been made mandatory.

Civic teams were instructed to clean side drains and shoulder drains to ensure roads remain free from water accumulation during heavy rains.

To improve emergency preparedness, the GBA ordered all civic bodies to activate control rooms, appoint nodal officers and coordinate closely with agencies such as BWSSB, Bescom, Metro authorities, Railways and fire services.

Officials were also asked to prepare rapid response systems for fallen trees and urgent public complaints.

Senior official Tushar Giri Nath inspected multiple vulnerable zones and ordered that temporary measures be installed wherever permanent works face delay.

Important works are ongoing at Kendriya Vihar, Kogilu Junction, Tata Nagar, Hebbal, Nagawara Junction, HBR Layout and Sai Layout.

At Hebbal, a 192-acre wetland development project is underway to improve rainwater absorption and reduce flooding at junctions and underpasses.

In tech corridor areas such as Manyata Tech Park and Outer Ring Road stretches, land has been acquired for new stormwater drains and artificial channels.

Authorities now face a race against time to finish pending projects before the first major rains arrive.
