Udupi: After several days of intense summer heat and rising humidity, heavy rainfall lashed Udupi district on Thursday, May 7, bringing significant relief to residents across the coastal region.
Heavy showers accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms were reported in several parts of Udupi city and nearby areas during the afternoon and evening hours. The sudden weather change led to a noticeable drop in temperatures, ending the uncomfortable hot conditions that had persisted over the past few weeks.
Residents welcomed the rainfall as temperatures had remained high across the district in recent days, with humid conditions making daily life increasingly difficult.
Several areas of Udupi experienced intense rainfall along with gusty winds and thunder activity. Dark clouds gathered over the district before heavy rain began, resulting in reduced visibility and slower traffic movement in some locations.
The showers provided immediate relief from the scorching heat that had affected normal routines and outdoor activities in recent weeks. Many residents stepped outdoors to enjoy the cooler weather after days of oppressive heat and humidity.
Local residents said the sudden rain and drop in temperature brought a refreshing atmosphere across the district, particularly during the evening hours.
While the rainfall brought relief from the heat, it also caused temporary waterlogging in some low-lying areas of the city. Rainwater accumulated on several roads, creating inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians.
Traffic movement slowed down in a few busy stretches as commuters navigated waterlogged roads during the downpour. Several two-wheeler riders and pedestrians were seen taking shelter under shopfronts and bus shelters as the heavy rain continued for a prolonged period.
Authorities are expected to monitor vulnerable areas prone to water accumulation if further rainfall continues over the coming days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), pre-monsoon rainfall activity is likely to continue across coastal Karnataka over the next few days.
Weather officials have predicted further chances of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in isolated places across the coastal belt, including Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
Meteorologists stated that the current showers are part of pre-monsoon weather activity that usually develops before the onset of the southwest monsoon along the Karnataka coast.
The recent rainfall is also expected to help reduce daytime temperatures temporarily, although humidity levels may remain high in coastal areas.
Many residents expressed relief after the heavy showers cooled down the district following prolonged hot weather conditions. Over the past several weeks, coastal Karnataka had been experiencing intense heat combined with rising humidity, leading to discomfort among the public.
Shopkeepers, office-goers, students, and daily commuters welcomed the rainfall despite the temporary traffic disruptions and waterlogging in certain areas.
Farmers and agricultural workers also expressed hope that continued pre-monsoon showers would help improve soil moisture ahead of the monsoon season.
With more rain and thunderstorms likely in the coming days, authorities have advised the public to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.
Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay away from weak trees and electric poles during strong winds, and exercise caution while driving on slippery roads.
Fishermen and coastal communities have also been advised to stay updated with weather alerts issued by the IMD as pre-monsoon weather systems continue to develop over the Arabian Sea and nearby regions.
The rainfall on Thursday marked a welcome break from the harsh summer conditions and raised hopes for an active pre-monsoon phase across coastal Karnataka.
