A 30-year-old man died after falling nearly 30 feet from the Kalamna-Pardi flyoverin Nagpur on Thursday night, in what police described as a high-speed motorcycle accident with disturbing safety lapses.
The deceased was identified as Nirankush Tiwari, a resident of Parvati Nagar in Ajni. He was riding a Royal Enfield Bullet from Wathoda towards Kalamna when the accident occurred near a sharp curve on the flyover.
Eyewitnesses told police that Tiwari was riding at a very high speed when he failed to negotiate the turn. The motorcycle reportedly veered from the left lane to the right and scraped the flyover barricade for nearly 50 feet. The right side of the bike was badly damaged before it finally came to a halt.
During the impact, Tiwari was thrown off the motorcycle and fell onto the road below, sustaining fatal injuries.
Bystanders immediately rushed him to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Tiwari was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which is believed to have significantly contributed to the severity of his injuries.
In a major twist, police discovered that the motorcycle was fitted with a fake registration plate. Officials said the number belonged to another individual with the same surname, whose vehicle was parked elsewhere at the time of the incident.
Police traced Tiwari's identity using the motorcycle's chassis and engine numbers, along with a mobile phone recovered from the spot. His family members were contacted and reached the hospital, only to be informed of his death.
Relatives told police that the motorcycle belonged to a family member and had been borrowed by Tiwari just a few days earlier. The reason for using a fictitious number plate remains unclear.
Pardi Police Station initially registered the case as an accidental death. Officials said it would likely be converted into a cognisable offence after further investigation, including possible charges under the Motor Vehicles Act for using a fake registration number.
