Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several coastal districts of Karnataka, warning that hot and humid weather conditions are likely to intensify over the next two days.
According to the IMD, the districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada are expected to experience rising temperatures along with increased humidity levels today and tomorrow. The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related health problems.
Meteorologists have indicated that the coastal belt of Karnataka is likely to witness a noticeable rise in temperature combined with high humidity.
Such conditions often make the weather feel significantly hotter than the actual temperature, leading to discomfort and increased risk of heat-related illnesses.
The IMD said that daytime temperatures in these districts could remain above normal levels while humidity from the Arabian Sea will add to the discomfort.
The combined effect of heat and moisture in the air is expected to create sultry conditions across coastal areas including Mangaluru, Udupi, Karwar and nearby towns.
Residents may experience warmer nights as well, since high humidity levels often prevent temperatures from dropping significantly after sunset.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the affected districts.
A yellow alert is generally issued to warn authorities and the public about potentially uncomfortable or hazardous weather conditions that require caution but are not expected to cause severe disruption.
The alert advises people to stay aware of the changing weather situation and take preventive measures, especially during peak daytime hours.
Officials said such alerts are part of routine weather advisories meant to minimise health risks during periods of extreme heat.
Local administrations are also expected to monitor the situation and disseminate weather updates to residents.
The warning applies to three major coastal districts of Karnataka — Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.
These regions often experience humid conditions during the pre-monsoon period due to their proximity to the Arabian Sea.
Cities such as Mangaluru, Udupi, Kundapura, Karwar and Honnavar may experience particularly uncomfortable weather conditions during the daytime.
The IMD has reiterated that people should remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow basic heat safety guidelines.
Drinking plenty of water, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours and taking regular breaks while working outdoors can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related health issues.
Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and issue further updates if weather conditions intensify.
For now, residents across the coastal districts of Karnataka have been advised to remain cautious as hot and humid weather conditions are expected to persist over the next two days.
