The woman, who works in a laboratory in South Korea, attended her Korean colleague's wedding along with two senior colleagues from India and Sri Lanka. What appeared to be a straightforward wedding visit soon turned into an unexpected cultural experience.

Wedding gift comes before lunch

The group attended the wedding ceremony, which lasted about an hour, before following other guests towards the lunch hall. However, they were stopped by security staff and asked to show a token.

The three visitors were confused because they had not brought their money envelope with them. They had assumed they could hand the gift to the couple later.

They eventually contacted their Korean colleague, who explained the custom. Guests were expected to first visit a reception counter, where they handed over their monetary gift or envelope. In return, they received a token that allowed them to enter the dining area.

A simple tradition leaves Indian guests surprised

Once the situation was explained to the wedding staff, the visitors were allowed to hand over their envelope and join the other guests for lunch.

The Indian woman later shared the experience on social media, describing the practice as very different from what she was accustomed to seeing at weddings in India.

While giving money or gifts to newlyweds is also common in India, the system of receiving a token before entering the dining hall was unfamiliar to her.
