New York: Loyalty towards Apple's flagship iPhone has reached record levels in 2026, with a new survey revealing that users are increasingly sticking with the brand while more Android users are switching to iPhones.
According to a study conducted by SellCell involving 5,000 smartphone users in the United States, iPhone retention has climbed to 96.4%, marking a significant rise from 91.9% in 2021 and 90.5% in 2019.
The report highlights a striking trend: Android users are 3.7 times more likely to switch to an iPhone than iPhone users are to move to Android.
While only 3.6% of iPhone users said they would consider switching platforms during their next upgrade, about 13.6% of Android users expressed interest in moving away from their current ecosystem.
Overall Android loyalty stands at 86.4%, considerably lower than Apple's current retention rate.
One of the biggest factors behind Apple's growing loyalty is its tightly integrated ecosystem. Features such as iMessage, FaceTime, and iCloud, along with seamless connectivity between devices like AirPods and Apple , create a unified user experience that is difficult to leave.
Experts note that once users become accustomed to this ecosystem, switching to another platform often involves inconvenience, including data migration and loss of interconnected services.
Additionally, 60.8% of respondents cited a preference for Apple's iOS platform as the primary reason for staying, while 17.4% pointed to their investment in the Apple ecosystem.
Apple's strong emphasis on privacy continues to be a major draw for users. The company has consistently positioned privacy as a core feature, which resonates with consumers increasingly concerned about data security.
Beyond functionality, Apple's brand perception as a premium and reliable product also contributes to its loyalty. In many markets, owning an iPhone is associated with status, further reinforcing user retention.
Despite the high loyalty rate, price continues to be a sticking point for a small segment of users. Among the 3.6% of iPhone users considering a switch to Android, the high cost of Apple devices was one of the most commonly cited reasons.
This suggests that while Apple dominates in user retention, affordability remains a challenge in expanding its user base further.
The survey also pointed to growing loyalty for Samsung, one of Apple's biggest competitors in the smartphone market. Samsung's loyalty rate has increased to 90.1% in 2026, up from 74% in 2021.
This indicates that while Apple leads in retention, competition within the Android ecosystem is also strengthening, particularly among premium device users.
The latest survey underscores Apple's strong hold over its user base, driven by ecosystem integration, brand value, and privacy features. With loyalty rates nearing saturation levels, the company appears well-positioned to retain its customers while continuing to attract switchers from Android.
However, pricing and competition from brands like Samsung will remain key factors shaping the smartphone market in the years ahead.
