Karnataka plans 450 km white-topping for Bengaluru roads

News Karnataka 3 weeks ago

The Karnataka government has announced plans to white-top 450 kilometres of roads in Bengaluru over the next three years, aiming to improve durability and reduce road maintenance costs in the rapidly growing city.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah while presenting the state budget, where he outlined several infrastructure initiatives for Bengaluru.

According to the Chief Minister, the proposed white-topping project will require an estimated ₹3,000 crore investment.

White-topping involves laying a concrete layer over existing asphalt roads, which increases durability and reduces frequent maintenance compared to traditional asphalt roads.

However, the Chief Minister did not specify how the project would be funded.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has already taken up 158 kilometres of white-topping work, with projects worth around ₹1,700 crore currently under construction.

Earlier, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had completed white-topping works covering approximately 100 kilometres of roads across the city.

These projects are part of ongoing efforts to improve Bengaluru's road infrastructure and address long-standing complaints about potholes and road damage.

The state budget also highlighted several other road infrastructure projects currently underway in Bengaluru.

The GBA is implementing arterial and sub-arterial road development works costing ₹1,936 crore, aimed at improving connectivity across key corridors in the city.

Additionally, ward-level road asphalting projects worth ₹1,255 crore are being undertaken to improve neighbourhood roads.

The Outer Ring Road improvement project, estimated to cost ₹450 crore, is also progressing through various stages of implementation.

The government is also considering reviving the Intermediate Ring Road (IRR) project, particularly the stretch connecting Nelamangala, Tavarekere and Bidadi.

According to Siddaramaiah, the project will be implemented using financial resources from the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) along with support from local planning authorities.

The proposed projects aim to enhance urban mobility, reduce congestion, and strengthen Bengaluru's road infrastructure in the coming years.
