Peru remains a dream destination for many travellers, known for iconic sites like Machu Picchu, the Amazon rainforest and rich Inca heritage.

However, Indian travellers are being reminded that visa-free entry rules can be more complex than they appear.

Recent reports highlighted a case in which an Indian family was unable to board a flight to Peru due to visa-related confusion, despite having planned their holiday well in advance.

Indian passport holders may enter Peru without a separate Peruvian visa only if they meet certain conditions. According to guidelines from the Embassy of Peru in India, Indians may qualify for visa-free travel if they hold a valid visa or permanent residency from one of the following regions:

The visa should generally remain valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Peru.

Eligible travellers may stay in Peru for up to 180 days within a one-year period, subject to immigration approval on arrival.

Even if a traveller qualifies under exemption rules, airlines may interpret regulations conservatively because they can be held responsible if passengers are denied entry. This means boarding may still be refused if documentation appears unclear.
