Paying guest (PG) accommodations in the city have come under strict scrutiny after several facilities were found violating solid waste management rules by dumping mixed waste in public spaces.
The action follows a recent incident in SG Palya, where a PG facility was caught littering by marshals and engineers of Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited. Authorities imposed a fine of ₹40,000 on the owner for improper waste disposal.
Officials stated that such violations not only affect cleanliness but also pose health risks to residents and the surrounding community.
Authorities clarified that PG accommodations generating more than 100 kg of waste daily, or those operating in buildings exceeding 5,000 square feet, are categorised as bulk waste generators.
Such establishments are mandated to appoint authorised vendors to handle waste segregation, collection, and disposal in compliance with civic regulations.
Following the SG Palya incident, senior officials have directed field teams to carry out inspections across PG facilities in Bengaluru. The focus is on ensuring adherence to waste segregation norms and preventing illegal dumping in public areas and drains.
Civic authorities have issued a stern warning that continued violations will invite heavier penalties. In serious cases, trade licences of non-compliant PGs may be suspended, and the health wing of the corporation will be involved for further action.
The crackdown highlights the city's growing push towards better waste management practices and accountability among bulk waste generators.
