Residents oppose park space cut in Kempegowda Layout

News Karnataka 1 month ago

Residents of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout (NPKL) have raised strong objections to a proposed reduction in park and open spaces in the revised layout plan by the Bangalore Development Authority.

According to allottees, the original 2014 approved plan had earmarked around 40 acres of park and open space in the 4th Block. However, the revised proposal reportedly reduces this to 35 acres.

Residents argue that this five-acre reduction violates the terms under which sites were originally allotted, as park space was a key factor in planning and purchase decisions.

Allottees highlighted that the 4th Block already faces limitations in usable open space due to drain alignments and high-tension power lines. Large portions of land are considered unsuitable or unsafe for regular use.

They further alleged that areas being counted as park space include buffer zones near drains, sewage treatment plants, and even land close to a graveyard — raising concerns over actual usability.

Residents have also questioned whether parts of designated park land are being converted into civic amenity (CA) sites, potentially for commercial use.

Some allege that prime open spaces are being repurposed, while park reservations are shifted to less practical locations, reducing their benefit to residents.

Allottees have submitted a formal representation to the BDA, urging authorities to restore park and open spaces in line with the 2014 layout approval.

They have also raised the issue with the BDA commissioner, seeking clarity and transparency in the revised plan.

Residents emphasised that open spaces are essential for environmental balance, public health, and community wellbeing. Any reduction, they argue, could significantly impact the quality of life in the layout.

As the matter gains attention, residents are calling for accountability and adherence to original planning commitments.
