Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 launched with agentic AI

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 launched with agentic AI

News Karnataka 3 weeks ago

Maui:Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation flagship mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, bringing a new focus on on-device agentic AI alongside upgrades to performance, gaming, cameras and connectivity.

The chips were announced at the Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, on September 22, with the summit continuing through September 24. Qualcomm is positioning the new platforms as key products for what it calls the agentic AI era.

Both platforms use a 2nm process and combine Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU. The Extreme Gen 6 sits at the top of the new lineup, while the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 brings many of the same capabilities to a wider range of premium smartphones.

Agentic AI takes centre stage

Qualcomm’s biggest focus with the new Snapdragon platforms is agentic AI. The company says the chips are designed to support AI agents that can understand context, learn from user behaviour and provide more personalised and proactive assistance directly on the device.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 uses Qualcomm’s latest AI Engine, with the Hexagon NPU and Sensing Hub helping process AI workloads locally. Qualcomm says this approach can support more context-aware experiences while reducing the need to send sensitive information away from the device.

The regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 also supports multi-step agentic AI experiences, with Qualcomm highlighting improvements in performance-per-watt and on-device learning through its Sensing Hub.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Qualcomm’s top-end chip

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is the more powerful of the two new platforms and is designed for demanding gaming, photography, video and AI workloads.

One of its headline specifications is a Qualcomm Oryon CPU capable of reaching 5GHz. Qualcomm describes it as the world’s first mobile CPU to reach that clock speed. The company says the CPU delivers a 13% performance improvement over the previous generation, while the new Adreno GPU offers a 44% performance increase and 40% better power efficiency.

The Hexagon NPU is also claimed to be 35% faster, with up to 33% better performance-per-watt for generative and agentic AI workloads.

AI-powered gaming gets a boost

Gaming is another major area of improvement. Qualcomm’s new Adreno Neural Fusion combines AI-powered super resolution and frame generation with neural processing to improve visual quality while reducing the graphics workload.

The technology can reconstruct higher-resolution images from lower-resolution renders and generate additional frames, potentially allowing supported games to deliver smoother visuals while using less power. Qualcomm says Adreno Neural Fusion is supported on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and higher.

The Extreme Gen 6 also supports advanced graphics technologies including hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Nanite Virtualized Geometry and MegaLights.

Camera and video improvements

Qualcomm is also targeting professional-style video creation with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

The platform supports Advanced Professional Video (APV), along with Intelligent Pixel Control and the Elite Color Engine. Qualcomm says these technologies can improve scene understanding, image quality, colour and video consistency.

The Extreme Gen 6 supports 8K video capture at 60 frames per second and 4K recording at 240 frames per second. It also supports triple 64-megapixel cameras.

Intelligent Pixel Control is designed to analyse individual pixels and optimise them as conditions change, helping reduce issues such as halos and lens flare.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 brings flagship features to more phones

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 uses the same 2nm manufacturing process and Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU architecture.

It is positioned below the Extreme Gen 6 but retains many of the new platform’s major features. Qualcomm says its Oryon CPU delivers a 10% performance improvement and 37% better power efficiency compared with the previous generation, while the Adreno GPU offers a 35% performance increase and 40% improvement in efficiency.

The Hexagon NPU is claimed to deliver a 14% performance improvement, while the platform supports Qualcomm’s new agentic AI capabilities, Intelligent Pixel Control and advanced gaming features.

Faster connectivity

Both platforms also receive connectivity upgrades.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 uses Qualcomm’s X105 5G Modem-RF System, with peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps and upload speeds of up to 4.2Gbps. Qualcomm’s FastConnect 8800 system supports next-generation Wi-Fi, including Wi-Fi 8, with peak speeds of up to 11.6Gbps.

The platforms also support satellite-ready 5G connectivity and AI-enhanced connectivity features aimed at improving reliability and power efficiency.

Which phones will get Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6?

Qualcomm says smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will debut from HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi.

The company has not identified all the specific smartphone models in its launch announcement.

The new chips therefore mark a significant expansion of Qualcomm’s flagship mobile platform strategy, with on-device agentic AI positioned alongside traditional improvements in processing power, gaming, imaging and connectivity.
