Srikkanth slams Riyan Parag over IPL 2026 tactics

News Karnataka 1 week ago

Chennai: Former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth has once again launched a sharp attack on Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag , questioning both his on-field decisions and overall impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.

Despite Rajasthan Royals enjoying a strong campaign with four wins in five matches, Parag's leadership and performances have come under scrutiny, with Srikkanth accusing the young skipper of lacking substance and delivering more 'style' than results.

Srikkanth did not mince words while criticising Parag, stating that the RR captain has failed to make meaningful contributions with the bat while continuing to project confidence in public appearances.

'He's only there for style. As usual, he did nothing with the bat and spoke at the post-match presentation. He's just there for style and does nothing else,' Srikkanth remarked during a video on his YouTube channel.

The former opener's remarks add to a series of criticisms he has directed at Parag over time, often questioning his consistency and temperament at the highest level.

A major point of contention in Srikkanth's criticism was Parag's decision not to utilise star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja during RR's recent clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Jadeja, widely regarded as one of the most reliable spin options in the league, surprisingly did not bowl a single over in the match. Parag later explained that the decision was influenced by SRH's left-heavy batting line-up.

However, Srikkanth dismissed this reasoning outright, calling it illogical and 'absurd'.

'Is there some rule that a left-arm spinner can't bowl to a left-hander? It's absurd,' he said, expressing disbelief at the tactical call.

While Rajasthan Royals have largely performed well this season, Srikkanth warned that their bowling unit, particularly the Indian contingent, remains a concern.

He pointed out that the team's bowlers conceded heavily in the match against SRH, which ultimately led to their defeat. According to him, Parag's captaincy decisions — including the non-utilisation of Jadeja — played a significant role in the outcome.

'The 11 overs between Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma, and Ravi Bishnoi went for 142 runs. That's where the match was over,' Srikkanth said.

He added that the bowlers struggled to contain the opposition, with SRH batters attacking relentlessly and exposing weaknesses in RR's strategy.

Srikkanth cautioned that if Rajasthan Royals fail to address their bowling issues and tactical shortcomings, they could face heavy defeats in the coming matches despite their promising start.

He stressed that consistency in team selection, better utilisation of key players, and sharper decision-making will be crucial as the tournament progresses.

'RR also has to start thinking about their bowling combination. If they bowl like this, they'll receive a thrashing,' he warned.

With the IPL 2026 season entering a crucial phase, the spotlight is firmly on Riyan Parag to justify his role as captain and deliver both with the bat and in leadership.

While the team's results have largely been positive, individual performances and tactical decisions are increasingly being scrutinised by experts and fans alike.

Parag, who has often been seen as a confident and expressive leader, now faces the challenge of converting that confidence into consistent performances on the field.

Kris Srikkanth's latest remarks underline growing concerns around Riyan Parag's effectiveness as both a player and captain. While Rajasthan Royals remain in a strong position in the points table, internal inconsistencies and questionable decisions could prove costly if not addressed promptly.

As the competition intensifies, Parag will need to respond with performances rather than words, ensuring that his leadership translates into tangible results and keeps RR on track for a deep run in IPL 2026.
