St Aloysius University marks Women's Day with awareness programme

Mangaluru: The Al-Empower HR Forum of the Department of Social Work, School of Arts and Humanities at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), in collaboration with the NCC Wings Corps, organised a programme titled 'Empowered Women, Empower the World' at Saanidhya Hall to mark International Women's Day 2026 .

The event aimed to promote awareness about women's rights, legal protections, and social empowerment, while encouraging students to actively contribute to building a more inclusive society.

The programme was graced by Geetha D Kulkarni, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), City Crime Records Bureau (CCRB), Mangaluru, who attended as the chief guest.

During her address, she spoke extensively about legal provisions and institutional frameworks that safeguard women's rights and safety in India.

She explained the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and its transition to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, highlighting the importance of legal awareness among citizens.

Kulkarni also elaborated on several institutions working for the welfare and protection of women and children, including the National Commission for Women, the State Commission for Women, and the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

Referring to Article 14 of the Constitution of India, she emphasised the principle of equality before the law and the constitutional guarantee that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, religion, caste, or gender.

The session also addressed the growing issue of cybercrime, with Kulkarni explaining the common methods used in online offences and the precautions individuals should take to protect themselves from digital fraud and harassment.

She encouraged students to remain vigilant in the digital space and to report cyber offences promptly.

Kulkarni concluded her address by stressing the importance of maintaining both physical and mental well-being, urging young people to prioritise health alongside academic and professional development.

As part of the programme, the organisers held a felicitation ceremony to honour ACP Geetha D Kulkarni for her service and contributions towards public safety and women's empowerment.

During the event, Dr Vidya Vinutha Dsouza, Assistant Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities and Forum Coordinator, was also felicitated in recognition of her contributions to the forum and for the awards and recognitions she has received in recent times.

The programme began with a welcome address by Fg Offr Dr Alwyn Misquith, Associate NCC Officer.

Dr Shwetha Rasquinha, Head of the Department of Social Work, shared her message highlighting the importance of empowering women through education and social awareness.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Vidya Vinutha Dsouza, Forum Coordinator.

The event was attended by Dr Loveena Lobo, Director of Maffei Block; Dr Rose Veera Dsouza, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities; and Mr Najeeb, Student Coordinator.

Students from the Al-Empower HR Forum and NCC Wings Corps actively participated in the programme. The event was compered by Ms Neeradha, who served as the master of ceremonies.

The celebration served as a platform to highlight the importance of gender equality, legal awareness, and youth participation in advancing women's empowerment in society.
