Trump thanks India, Reliance for backing new US oil refinery

Washington: US President Donald Trump has thanked India and Reliance Industries for supporting what he described as a historic investment to build the first new oil refinery in the United States in nearly 50 years.

Announcing the project on Tuesday through a post on Truth Social, Trump said the refinery would be constructed in Brownsville, Texas, as part of a massive USD 300 billion investment aimed at boosting American energy production and strengthening economic partnerships with international partners.

However, it remains unclear whether the refinery project forms part of a broader agreement between the United States and India.

According to Trump, the planned refinery will be located at the Port of Brownsville in Texas and will mark the first new oil refinery to be built in the United States in half a century.

He described the initiative as a landmark development for the American energy sector and credited international investors, including India and Reliance Industries, for backing the project.

'Thank you to our partners in India, and their largest privately held energy company, Reliance, for this tremendous investment,' Trump said in his announcement.

He also characterised the deal as one of the largest investment commitments in the country's history.

Trump claimed the project would significantly expand the country's refining capacity and help strengthen domestic energy supply.

Trump described the refinery project as part of a broader USD 300 billion investment plan that would bring large-scale economic benefits to the United States.

According to the US president, the development will generate thousands of jobs and boost economic growth in the South Texas region.

He said the facility would play a key role in supplying fuel to domestic markets while also increasing exports to international buyers.

Trump added that the refinery would support national security objectives by strengthening America's energy infrastructure.

'A new refinery at the Port of Brownsville will fuel US markets, strengthen our national security and boost American energy production,' he said.

Trump credited his administration's 'America First' policy framework for attracting major investment into the country's energy sector.

He said regulatory reforms, faster permitting processes and tax reductions had encouraged companies to invest billions of dollars in projects within the United States.

'It is because of our America First agenda, streamlining permits and lowering taxes, that have attracted billions of dollars in deals coming back to our nation,' Trump wrote in his social media post.

According to him, the project represents a step towards restoring what he called 'American energy dominance'.

The president also said the facility would be designed with modern technology to ensure high environmental standards.

He claimed it would become 'the cleanest refinery in the world'.

While Trump acknowledged India and Reliance Industries in the announcement, detailed information about the company's specific role in the project has not yet been clarified.

Reliance Industries is India's largest privately held energy company and operates one of the world's biggest refining complexes at Jamnagar in Gujarat.

Industry analysts believe that the company's experience in refining and petrochemical operations could make it a valuable partner in large-scale energy infrastructure projects.

However, officials have not yet confirmed whether Reliance will directly participate in the refinery construction or investment.

Reports suggest that plans to build a refinery in Brownsville have existed for several years.

In 2024, Dallas-based startup Element Fuels Holdings announced efforts to revive a proposal to construct a major oil refinery in the same region.

The project was pitched as the first all-new refinery in the United States in nearly five decades.

However, large refinery projects in the US have historically faced regulatory hurdles, environmental scrutiny and financing challenges.

Trump's announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

The situation has significantly disrupted global oil markets.

The conflict has reportedly led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit routes through which nearly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies normally pass.

The shutdown has forced several tankers to halt operations, while producers have slowed or stopped pumping oil due to storage constraints.

These developments have pushed global crude oil prices sharply higher and triggered concerns about potential long-term disruptions to global energy supplies.

If the refinery project proceeds as announced, it could significantly expand refining capacity in the United States and strengthen energy trade between countries.

The facility is also expected to generate thousands of jobs in construction, operations and related industries in Texas.

Trump described the project as a major economic opportunity for the region.

'It will power global exports and bring thousands of long overdue jobs and growth to a region that deserves it,' he said.

However, further clarity is expected from government agencies and companies involved in the project regarding timelines, financing arrangements and the exact role of international partners.
