Chennai: Udhayanidhi Stalin has emerged as a prominent third-generation leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, transitioning swiftly from the Tamil film industry to a key role in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

Born on November 27, 1977, he is the son of Chief Minister M K Stalin and the grandson of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. His rise reflects both political legacy and a growing independent presence within the party.

Before entering politics, Udhayanidhi had a successful career as a film producer and actor. He made his acting debut with the hit film Oru Kal Oru Kannadi in 2012 and later appeared in several commercially successful films.

He officially stepped away from acting in 2023 after his last film Maamannan, choosing to focus entirely on public life.

Udhayanidhi formally entered politics in 2019 when he was appointed Secretary of the DMK Youth Wing—a position previously held by his father for over three decades.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, he won from the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency by a margin of over 70,000 votes, a seat historically associated with his grandfather Karunanidhi.

He was inducted into the state cabinet in December 2022 and later elevated to Deputy Chief Minister in September 2024, marking one of the fastest political rises in recent state politics.

Currently, Udhayanidhi Stalin handles important portfolios, including Youth Welfare, Sports Development, and Special Programme Implementation.

His tenure as Sports Minister has seen initiatives such as the Champions Foundation, the Chief Minister's Trophy, and hosting of national-level events like the Khelo India Games in Tamil Nadu.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Loyola College (1997). As per recent declarations, his assets are valued at around ₹20.64 crore.

Udhayanidhi gained recognition as both a producer and actor in Tamil cinema before transitioning fully into politics.

During the 2021 elections, he used a symbolic 'single brick' to highlight delays in the AIIMS Madurai project, a campaign strategy that resonated widely with voters.

He faces multiple cases, largely linked to protests and political activism. He has been vocal on issues such as the NEET examination and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

As Sports Minister, he has played a key role in promoting sports infrastructure and athlete support systems in Tamil Nadu.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's journey from cinema to governance highlights a blend of legacy, strategy, and rapid political growth. As a young leader in a major regional party, his role in shaping Tamil Nadu's political future will continue to be closely watched.
