Waste segregation now mandatory in city, fines begin from April 1

In a major step towards scientific waste management, Bengaluru has made segregation of household waste compulsory from April 1 under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026.

The initiative will be enforced by the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) along with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), aiming to streamline waste processing and reduce the burden on sanitation workers.

Residents must now segregate waste into four categories—wet, dry, sanitary, and special waste—before handing it over for collection. Officials have made it clear that auto-tipper staff will not collect unsegregated waste under any circumstances.

The move comes as the city generates nearly 5,000 tonnes of waste daily, much of which is currently handed over as mixed garbage, complicating processing and increasing environmental risks.

Authorities have warned of penalties for non-compliance. A fine of ₹500 will be imposed for the first violation and ₹1,000 for the second. Repeated violations could lead to stricter action, including police complaints.

Officials said that while awareness drives are underway, enforcement will be firm from the outset to ensure compliance.

The rules also mandate safety measures for sanitation workers, including the use of uniforms, gloves, masks, and gumboots.

By ensuring segregation at source, wet waste can be composted into manure, while dry waste can be recycled more efficiently. This is expected to significantly reduce landfill pressure and improve overall waste handling.

Authorities stressed that the success of the initiative depends on active public participation, urging residents to adopt responsible waste practices.
