40 Huskies, one truck, zero mercy: The cruel canine abandonment in Hyderabad's Shankarpally

Hyderabad: Dozens of Husky dogs were discovered abandoned on the Shankarpally-Patancheru road on April 28.

The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the city's animal welfare community, came to light after rescue teams received a frantic call regarding the dogs' dire condition.

The SOS call

Rescue operations led by the Aasra Foundation and Swan NGO were launched immediately after a distress call on the morning of April 28. The caller informed that around 40 Huskies were brought in a truck and abandoned at a secluded place.

Kiran Kumar, one of the rescue team members, said, "Upon reaching the location, a secluded, forest-like area, we met with a grim sight of abandoned Huskies. Of which, one Husky is already dead and decomposed."

According to the call, a rescue call received by the team, a truck had reportedly offloaded approximately 40 Siberian Huskies at the site a couple of days prior.

Kumar further said that by the time help arrived, several of the dogs had already been taken in by passersby. And they suspect that some dogs have also entered the forest area in search of a cooler climate. They are in coordination with another NGO to search in the forest area as well.

Meanwhile, the rescue team managed to secure six of the surviving dogs, and they are now under the care of the NGOs involved.

Huskies are not ready for hot and harsh climates

The Siberian Husky, a breed native to the freezing climates of the Arctic, is notoriously ill-equipped to handle the harsh, sweltering temperatures of the Telangana summer. Rescue workers noted that the dogs were suffering immensely in the heat.

"They can survive indoors where it is controlled, but they cannot roam in the sun like local breeds," explains Kumar. "The heat is likely what caused the death of the dog we found. Their ancestors were brought here and have adapted to some extent to stay indoors, but being left out in this weather is a death sentence for them," adds Kumar.

Who might have abandoned the Huskies?

The scale of the abandonment, 40 dogs of a single, high-maintenance breed, has led animal rights activists to suspect a darker motive. The rescue team pointed to two primary theories:

1. Breeder Abandonment: With the rise of high-end pet culture, breeders often mass-produce Huskies for profit. If the dogs are not sold or become a financial burden, they are frequently discarded.

2. Laboratory Use: There is a grave suspicion that these animals might have been used in laboratories for medical trials or cosmetic testing.

The rescue team doubts that someone may have been checking the breed's suitability for such purposes before dumping them in this remote location.

"It is impossible for a household to raise 40 Huskies. They were clearly brought here by a truck and dumped," the rescuer noted.

Investigation underway

In response to the incident, the Aasra Foundation and Swan NGO have filed a formal complaint at the BDL Police Station. The local law enforcement agency has visited the site and initiated an inquiry to track down the truck and the individuals responsible for this act.
