Hyderabad: To combat the burden of malnutrition crisis in children, researchers at ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) have successfully developed a dietary screening tool to combat the 'silent burden' of micronutrient malnutrition in children.
The findings, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, introduce a context-specific Diet Diversity Score (DDS) aimed at identifying the risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies in school-age children (6-10 years).
Tapping into the silent malnutrition crisis
Even without visible signs of malnutrition, deficiencies in essential micronutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin B12 and vitamin A can severely impair a child's immunity, growth and academic performance.
Aligning with the ICMR Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024), which push for diverse food consumption, the Hyderabad-based research team sought to simplify complex dietary assessments into a rapid, field-friendly screening method.
How the 13-food group system works
Unlike traditional systems that look at broad categories, the new tool breaks down nutrition into 13 highly specific food groups based closely on nutrient profiles:
- Granular Categories: Broad groups were subdivided. For instance, vitamin-A-rich foods (such as green leafy vegetables, carrots, papaya, and mango) are treated as their own distinct category to raise the sensitivity of the assessment.
- The 5-Gram Threshold: In Indian culinary habits, nutrient-dense foods are frequently mixed into dishes in small portions. The tool applies a low minimum intake threshold of just 5 grams, ensuring that small quantities-like a few bites of fruit or a splash of milk-are accurately captured.
Proven accuracy
The system was validated by cross-referencing children's scores with actual biomarker data, showing a strong correlation with overall micronutrient adequacy and haemoglobin levels.
The study revealed a critical benchmark: children who consumed foods from 10 or more of the 13 food groups (meeting the 5g threshold per group) were significantly more likely to hit at least 70 per cent of their daily micronutrient requirements.
"Diet diversity is one of the most practical indicators of diet quality," explained Dr Subba Rao M Gavaravarapu, Scientist G at ICMR-NIN, who led the study. "By converting complex dietary assessment into an easy-to-use scoring tool, this DDS offers a promising approach to identify children at risk of micronutrient inadequacy and supports timely nutrition interventions."
Potential for school health programs
While the tool holds massive potential for parents, teachers, and school health programs like the ICDS, institutional leaders are calling for regional expansions.
Dr Bharati Kulkarni, Director of ICMR-NIN, noted: "The DDS has the potential to support school health programmes. However, further multicentric validation across diverse regions and food environments in India is essential before large-scale implementation."
