Hyderabad: Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has seized 113 Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits, commonly known as abortion kits, from a wholesale medical shop in Nalgonda for allegedly stocking them without valid purchase bills.
The raid was conducted on July 29 following credible information at Sri Laxmi Medical Agencies, located in Mahaveer Medical Market, Prakasham Bazar, Nalgonda. The wholesale firm is operated by proprietor-cum-competent person P. Sudhakar.
During the inspection, officials found 113 "Safe-T Kit" abortion kits, manufactured by Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Haridwar, bearing Batch No. BH007ABB and an expiry date of February 2028. According to the DCA, the kits were stocked for sale without valid purchase invoices, allegedly violating provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules governing the stocking and sale of medicines.
The seized stock is valued at ₹47,672.
The DCA said MTP kits contain a combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, medicines used for the medical termination of early pregnancy under prescribed conditions and strict medical supervision.
It cautioned that unsupervised or improper use of these medicines can lead to serious complications, including excessive bleeding, incomplete abortion, infection and, in some cases, life-threatening consequences.
Officials collected samples of the seized drugs for laboratory analysis. Further investigation is underway, and legal action will be initiated against those found responsible, the department said.
Advisory
The Drugs Control Administration noted that the illegal purchase and sale of MTP kits is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with imprisonment of up to two years. It has also urged the public to report illegal sale or manufacture of medicines through its toll-free helpline 1800-599-6969, operational on working days from 10.30 am to 5 pm.
