Guntur: A case of alleged sexual harassment has been registered against Dr Ubaid Mushtaq, Assistant Professor of Economics at SRM University-AP, Mangalagiri, following a complaint by a woman faculty member from the same institution.
What are the allegations?
According to the complainant, the accused subjected her to continuous harassment over a period of time at their workplace. Both individuals were part of the same professional and social circle and reportedly shared a daily carpool arrangement.
In her complaint, the woman stated that the accused's behaviour became increasingly inappropriate, intrusive and unwelcome, particularly before December 2025. Despite her clear disinterest and repeated refusals, he allegedly continued to make advances and pressured her to invite him to her residence, which she declined multiple times.
Harassment over social media
She further alleged that the accused sent sexually explicit and objectionable messages via Instagram using 'vanish mode,' where messages disappear after being viewed, making it difficult to preserve evidence.
The complainant also accused him of making inappropriate remarks about her appearance and clothing, thereby creating a hostile and intimidating work environment.
She stated that the ongoing harassment caused her severe mental distress, anxiety and fear, and that she is currently undergoing treatment. The complaint alleges offences including cyber sexual harassment, outraging the modesty of a woman, and criminal intimidation.
Admin took no action, alleges complaint
"Although the issue was brought to the attention of the Dean of Easwari School of Liberal Arts at SRM University-AP, no effective action was taken. The inaction further worsened her distress and sense of insecurity," she stated in her complaint.
Citing the continued presence of the accused at the workplace as a source of psychological trauma and intimidation, the complainant has urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate legal action.
A complaint has been filed at the Pedakakani Police Station in Guntur district, and a copy of the complaint is with NewsMeter.
Police registered an FIR under Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (as amended in 2008), along with Section 75(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Following the complaint, the university has withdrawn Dr. Ubaid Mushtaq from the post of Head of the Department and further action will be based on the findings of the ICC and the police investigation.
