Hyderabad: Telangana government is planning to make Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points mandatory in the basements of apartment complexes.

The move is aimed at providing residents with convenient home-charging access.

The proposed policy was discussed at a high-level review meeting on EV charging infrastructure held at the Secretariat on Friday, where senior officials discussed ways to strengthen charging infrastructure across the state.

Special Chief Secretary (Energy) Navin Mittal said the Energy Department is formulating a policy to support the growing shift towards electric mobility, particularly in urban areas where access to home charging remains a challenge.

Focus on expanding EV Infrastructure

The review meeting, convened by Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, focused on scaling up EV charging infrastructure through a coordinated strategy involving multiple government departments and private stakeholders.

Emphasising the need to accelerate EV adoption in line with sustainability goals and clean energy transition, the Chief Secretary said a robust and widespread charging network is essential to build user confidence and meet the increasing demand for electric mobility.

He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive and forward-looking roadmap for expanding EV charging infrastructure by leveraging both government initiatives and private sector participation.

Seamless ecosystem for urban and rural areas

Stressing coordinated action, Ramakrishna Rao called for the creation of a seamless EV ecosystem that ensures accessibility, reliability, and efficiency of charging facilities across both urban and rural areas.

Officials also discussed ways to improve infrastructure planning and address gaps in the existing charging network to support long-term growth in the EV sector.

Real-time dashboard planned

The Chief Secretary also instructed officials to develop a centralised, real-time dashboard to map and monitor EV charging infrastructure across Telangana.

The dashboard is expected to serve as a key planning and monitoring tool, helping the government track progress, ensure transparency, and support the timely deployment of charging stations statewide.

Senior officials attend meeting

The meeting was attended by Transport, Roads & Buildings Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj, Planning Secretary Gaurav Uppal, TGRTC Managing Director Nagireddy, Transport Commissioner Ilambarithi, TGIIC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Shashanka.

GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, TGREDCO Managing Director Anila Vavilla, and representatives from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
