Authorities say the move is aimed at protecting children from extreme weather and health risks as temperatures continue to fall sharply in many regions.
While northern states battle harsh winter conditions, most parts of South India remain unaffected, with schools operating as usual except where local holidays have been declared. Below is a state-wise update on school holidays and closures for Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Schools Closed in Jharkhand Due to Severe Cold Wave
Jharkhand continues to face severe cold wave conditions, prompting the state government to extend school closures.
In Ranchi and other districts, all government and private schools from Kindergarten to Class 12 will remain closed till December 31, 2025. Authorities have strictly instructed schools not to conduct physical classes during this period as temperatures remain dangerously low, especially during morning hours.
Bihar School Holiday on December 30: Revised Timings Announced
In Bihar, district administrations have taken precautionary measures, particularly for younger children. In Patna district, schools from pre-school to Class 8 will remain closed till December 30, 2025. This closure applies to government schools, private schools and Anganwadi centres. However, Classes 9 to 12 will continue to operate, but with revised timings from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Officials have clarified that pre-board and board examinations will be conducted as per schedule, without any changes.
Uttar Pradesh Schools Closed Till January 1
Uttar Pradesh has announced one of the most extensive closures due to the intense cold wave. Under the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, schools across the state have been ordered to remain closed till January 1, 2026. The order applies to all classes up to Class 12, covering CBSE, ICSE and UP Board schools. Many institutions that have winter vacations starting January 1 are currently conducting online classes to complete academic work ahead of the break.
States Where Schools Remain Open on December 30
Despite the cold wave in the north, schools in most southern states are expected to function normally on December 30.

Kerala: Local Holiday Declared for Sivagiri Pilgrimage
Kerala does not have a statewide holiday on December 30. However, a local holiday has been declared in Thiruvananthapuram district on December 31, 2025, due to the 93rd Sivagiri Pilgrimage.
Educational institutions and government offices will remain closed in Chirayinkeezhu and Varkala taluks. The pilgrimage will be observed from December 30 to January 1.
