The government has dismissed recent social media claims suggesting a redesign of the Aadhaar card. In an official clarification, the Centre stated that there are no plans to introduce a new version of the identity document with changes such as updated colours, a different layout, or added features like QR codes or holograms by the end of 2026.
What sparked the confusion?
Speculation had been circulating that the Aadhaar card might undergo a design overhaul due to security concerns. Some reports suggested a shift towards a format featuring only a photograph or a QR code. However, these claims were rejected by the authorities.
Government's response
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology clarified that such reports are misleading. It emphasised that there is no proposal to modify the Aadhaar card's design. The ministry also urged citizens to rely only on official updates issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), and to ignore unverified social media content.
Why Aadhaar matters
Aadhaar serves as a key identity document in India. It is widely used for availing government subsidies and benefits, completing KYC for banking and financial services. In addition it links with essential services such as PAN, pension accounts, EPF, and PPF. It is also commonly required for tasks like booking railway tickets and applying for jobs, education, or healthcare services.
Key facts
As per official data released earlier this year, Aadhaar has become the world's largest biometric identification system, with around 134 crore active users. Managed by UIDAI, the platform has processed more than 17,000 crore authentication transactions so far. In March this year, UIDAI introduced its first formal Bug Bounty Programme aimed at enhancing the security of the Aadhaar ecosystem. The initiative brings together a panel of 20 skilled security researchers and ethical hackers to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.
