Apple iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: What's new, what's not and should you upgrade?

News24 Online 0 months ago

Apple iPhone 17e made its debut earlier this week as the cheapest iPhone 17 series phone. Apple iPhone 17e is the successor of the iPhone 16e which came as a much-awaited replacement for the iPhone SE4. As Apple doesn't fiddle around much with its entry-level smartphones, the overall design and camera hardware of the Apple iPhone 17e is the same as its predecessor.

If you are using an iPhone 16e or an older model, here is a comparison that will tell you what is new, what is not and should you upgrade.

Design and display: Mostly unchanged

Apple iPhone 17e retains the same design language as the iPhone 16e. Both devices feature a similar display size, identical notch design and a familiar rear layout with a single camera module. It was rumoured that the company may introduce Dynamic Island in the 'e' model but that is not the case.

The biggest visible difference is the addition of a Soft Pink colour option on the iPhone 17e, alongside the existing Black and White variants.

The aluminium frame and IP68 water and dust resistance rating remain unchanged. However, durability has improved slightly with Ceramic Shield 2 protection, which Apple claims offers up to three times better scratch resistance.

Performance: A19 chip vs A18

The most significant upgrade is under the hood. The iPhone 16e runs on the A18 chip, while the iPhone 17e moves to the newer A19 chip. For those who don't know, the A19 chip also powers the Apple iPhone 17 which is the base model in the brand's flagship series launched in September.

The newer chip promises faster app launches, smoother multitasking and improved performance. It also provides better power efficiency and is likely to support future iOS updates for a longer period. For everyday users, the improvement may translate into slightly quicker performance and better long term software support.

Cameras: Same hardware, smarter software

Both phones feature the same camera hardware. 48MP Fusion rear camera and 12MP front camera.

The differences come mainly from software improvements. The iPhone 17e introduces updated camera processing and next generation Portrait mode with enhanced Focus and Depth control.

Battery and connectivity upgrades

Apple claims the same 26 hours of video playback for both devices, suggesting similar battery capacity.

However, the iPhone 17e introduces a key charging upgrade. While the iPhone 16e supported slower Qi wireless charging, the newer model adds 25W MagSafe wireless charging, enabling faster wireless top ups.

Connectivity is also improved with the introduction of the Apple C1x modem in the iPhone 17e. Both phones support Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C and satellite emergency communication.

Price comparison in India

Apple iPhone 17e is priced at:

Rs 64,900 for the 256GB model

Rs 84,900 for the 512GB model

It is available in Soft Pink, Black and White colour options.

Apple iPhone 16e remains cheaper:

Rs 47,900 for the 128GB version

Rs 61,790 for the 256GB model

Rs 80,690 for the 512GB version

It is available only in Black and White.

Should you upgrade?

Apple iPhone 17e offers meaningful improvements in performance, wireless charging speed and cellular connectivity, mainly due to the A19 chip and the new C1x modem. However, the iPhone 16e still delivers excellent value at its current lower price. For many users, especially those already using the 16e, the upgrade may only be worthwhile if MagSafe performance and longevity are priorities.
