Key political figures in the fray include Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, contesting from his stronghold Jalukbari and aiming for a hat-trick. Meanwhile, State Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi is seeking his first victory in the Assembly elections from Jorhat after serving as a Lok Sabha MP. Badruddin Ajmal, chief of the AIUDF, is contesting from Binnakandi after losing his Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in 2024, and Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal is aiming to retain Sibsagar, while Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary is contesting from Tamulpur.
Seat share breakdown: NDA vs Congress alliance
In terms of numbers, the ruling NDA alliance comprises the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodo Peoples' Front (BPF). The BJP has fielded 90 candidates, while the AGP and BPF have 26 and 11 candidates, respectively. The opposition alliance is led by the Congress with 99 candidates, followed by Raijor Dal (13), Assam Jatiya Parishad (10), CPI(M) (3), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (2).

Other parties in the fray include the AIUDF with 30 candidates, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) with 18 each, Trinamool Congress (TMC) with 22, and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) with 16. Additionally, 258 Independent candidates are contesting.
Exit Polls give NDA a strong edge in Assam
The April 9 elections recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.91%, including the highest-ever female participation at 86.5%. According to exit polls by Axis My India, the BJP-led NDA is projected to win a decisive majority, securing between 88 and 100 seats. The Congress-led alliance is expected to get 24-36 seats, while the BJP alone could emerge as the single-largest party with 70-80 seats.
