Apple's long-rumoured AirPods Pro with built-in cameras are reportedly no longer expected to launch in 2026. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the advanced earbuds have been pushed back to 2027, although Apple is still preparing to launch another updated AirPods Pro model before the end of next year.
The report suggests Apple has been developing multiple versions of its next-generation premium earbuds simultaneously, with one version now moving ahead of the more ambitious camera-equipped model.
Camera-equipped AirPods Pro delayed
According to the report, Apple has been working on a version of the AirPods Pro internally known by the codename B798, which is expected to feature integrated cameras or infrared sensors. Earlier reports suggested the product was approaching the final stages of development, but it is now believed to have missed Apple's 2026 launch window and is more likely to arrive in 2027.
The delay reportedly gives Apple more time to refine the technology before bringing it to consumers.
Another AirPods Pro could launch in 2026
While the camera-equipped version has reportedly been delayed, Apple is still expected to introduce another AirPods Pro model, internally codenamed B790, before the end of 2026.
According to the report, this version is further along in development, has reportedly appeared in iOS 27 code and is listed on Apple's internal product roadmap for a potential 2026 launch.
Although specific features remain unknown, the earbuds are expected to offer incremental upgrades over the current AirPods Pro rather than a major redesign.
Why does Apple want cameras in AirPods?
Reports suggest the cameras or infrared sensors are intended to work alongside Apple Intelligence by allowing the earbuds to gather information about the user's surroundings.
The technology could eventually complement future Apple devices such as the rumoured Apple Glass smart glasses. Instead of displaying information directly, the AirPods could use Siri to deliver AI-powered responses based on what the sensors detect, while visual information could appear on paired devices such as an iPhone or Apple Watch.
