The Iran war has created a serious global oil and gas crisis. A ceasefire has now been declared, but it's uncertain when this region will be engulfed in flames again.

Therefore, the Modi government has already begun preparations to eliminate the oil and gas crisis.

By approving two major hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh, the government has made it clear that India will no longer be dependent on Gulf countries for oil.

Rs 40,000 crore energy boost for Arunachal Pradesh

The Union government has approved two major hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, with a combined investment of around ₹40,000 crore. The move is aimed at reducing dependence on oil imports and strengthening India's shift towards clean energy.

Key Projects: Kalai-II and Kamala

The 1200 MW Kalai-II Project: This project, to be built in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, is the first major hydropower project in the Lohit Basin. It will cost ₹14,105.83 crore (approximately $1.4 billion).

When completed, it will produce 4852.95 million units of electricity annually. This will be a joint venture between THDC India Limited and the Arunachal Pradesh government, with financial support from the Government of India.

This project will not only improve power supply in Arunachal Pradesh but also significantly help manage peak demand and balance the national grid.

The 1720 MW Kamala Project: This is Arunachal Pradesh's second major gift. This project's capacity exceeds that of Kalai-II, illuminating the entire region. When both projects operate at their full capacity, Arunachal Pradesh will become a "powerhouse" for India.

Reducing dependence on Gulf oil

The government's push towards hydropower highlights a larger strategy to cut reliance on oil imports from Gulf countries. By investing in renewable energy, India aims to ensure a stable and self-reliant energy supply.

Boost to jobs and infrastructure

These projects are expected to generate thousands of jobs during construction and operation. Around 29 km of roads and bridges will also be developed, improving connectivity in remote areas.

Additionally, Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free electricity, along with an extra 1% for local development, supporting schools, healthcare, and infrastructure in the region.

The 'dungeon' of development under China's nose

This project also carries a significant geopolitical diplomacy. China frequently keeps an eye on the region where these projects are being built. Investing Rs 40,000 crore in such a sensitive region and strengthening its control over water through hydropower sends a significant message to China.
