Pat Cummins, captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for IPL 2026-who had been sidelined due to injury since July 2025 and managed to play only one Ashes Test in the interim-has left the team camp and returned home.
His objective is to undergo a final scan for his back injury.
Scan and Return Plan
According to reports, this scan was pre-scheduled and will be conducted under the supervision of Cricket Australia (CA). Cummins departed India following SRH's previous match, which was played against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata. If he receives clearance from CA, Cummins is expected to rejoin the team on April 17.
Ishan Kishan Leading SRH in IPL 2026
Due to Cummins' inability to take the field for the initial matches, SRH had appointed Ishan Kishan as the team captain. Ishan Kishan will continue to lead the team for the time being. Although Cummins has participated in training sessions, he is not yet fully fit to play matches.
Injury and Previous Performance
Cummins' last competitive appearance was limited to the third Ashes Test played in December. He had first experienced symptoms in his back the previous July. He had also hoped to play in the T20 World Cup but was ruled out due to a "minor setback."
Cummins' Preparation and Statement
Prior to the start of IPL 2026, Cummins had shared his recovery plan. He stated that he was currently bowling in the nets and expected to be fully fit by the middle of the tournament. His goal is to contribute to the team during the second half of the IPL and the finals.
Role of Overseas Fast Bowlers
In Cummins' absence, Eshan Malinga and David Payne have stepped up to fulfill the role of overseas fast bowlers for SRH. SRH's next match-their third of the season-is scheduled for Sunday against the Lucknow Super Giants, to be played in Hyderabad.
