The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the head of Meta India and several social media users over the circulation of AI-generated morphed videos of PM Narendra Modi.
The case is one of the highest-profile investigations involving a senior executive of a global technology company in India.
Probe Focuses on Facebook and Instagram Content
As per India Today's report, police sources said the investigation is linked to manipulated videos shared on Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Investigators believe the content may have misled the public and are examining possible violations of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
Police Examining Source and Spread of AI Videos
The Cyber Crime Police are investigating where the AI-generated videos originated, how they spread across social media platforms, and whether Meta's existing safeguards were sufficient to prevent their circulation.
The investigation will also look into the role of individuals accused of creating, uploading or sharing the manipulated videos.
Meta Representatives Questioned
The FIR was registered just days after the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police summoned Meta representatives to explain the company's systems for identifying and removing AI-generated scams, fake advertisements and other manipulated content.
A Meta representative reportedly appeared before investigators and explained the company's content moderation and compliance measures.
Investigation Still in Early Stage
The case highlights increasing scrutiny of social media platforms over the spread of AI-generated misinformation and the responsibility of intermediaries to prevent harmful content from being circulated online.
Police said the investigation is still at a preliminary stage and that no conclusions have been reached. They added that any further action will depend on the digital evidence collected during the investigation.
